Wireless Vulnerability in the News

17/10/2017 Written by Mark Simpson

There has been a lot of talk in the media about a new vulnerability in wireless networks. We would like to remove the hype and tell you about the real risk, what we are doing to protect our network and our customers and what you can do as an end user.
Firstly this vulnerability is just that at this point in time. So far there are no known attacks based on this vulnerability and most device manufacturers have already released patches to negate the threat. The risk of attack is extremely low as it requires one of your devices to be infected with malicious software, or for an attacker to have direct access to your Wi-Fi network.
We work closely with our suppliers to ensure that our network is kept up to date with the latest security patches and we will be patching our core devices as new updates become available. Advice from the manufacturer is that current software versions will already protect against this type of attack.
As end users it is vital that you ALWAYS install the latest software updates AND run good quality antivirus software on ALL of your devices. This includes Windows, Linux, iOS (Apple) and Android devices. Note that Smartphones and Tablets are just as vulnerable to this threat as are PCs and Laptops.
Feel free to contact our Helpdesk if you would have any concerns.
